Why I'm Skipping Black Friday Deals
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of getting my Bahama Top-Siders for fifty percent off just as much as the next guy. What I don't like is sleeping in a tent for two weeks just to get a better spot for the Harry Potter free-view and $100 off my new LCD television. Black Friday is a perfect example of what is wrong with the average American Investor.
Did you know that 80% of mutual funds under-perform the S&P 500? You would think that a stat like that would discourage many people from keeping their savings in these faltering funds, but the numbers tell a different story. As of 2008, over 52 million american households had a share in mutual funds. That's a shit ton. The problem is that most people think that the market is too complicated, or that it is unfair to the small investor. The latter may be true, but the perception that an honest investor without any inside knowledge or training can not make money on their own is absolutely false. Invest in what you know. Do your homework. Two hours spend researching for your portfolio is much more profitable, not to mention safer, than camping out on Black Friday. Remember, most mutual fund manager will still be taking home over 1% of your money even as they consistently under-perform.
